Cut away the grout surrounding the tile or tiles that you want to remove.
Removing bathroom wall tiles. If you are planning a bathroom or kitchen renovation you may have to remove tiles to give you a blank starting canvass. Tiles installed with thinset or another tile adhesive often require more work to remove them. Glide a rotary tool with an attachment that is able to cut grout along the grout line.
Put on protective gear to shield yourself from flying debris then use a cold chisel and a sledgehammer to break apart the first tile. If you dont care to save the substrate use a reciprocating saw to cut the tile and substrate. Work slowly and at about a 45 degree angle.
From there you can pry up the tiles with a flat pry bar if you want to keep the substrate. You should be able to slide a putty or plaster knife underneath the tile. Removing tiles is a job that you can do yourself with a few hand tools.
Be careful to cut away only the grout and not into the wall. If grout is still blocking the way keep cutting stopping often to check how much you have removed. Use the lightest pressure necessary to cut into the grout without cutting through to surface of the plaster.
A wide blade putty knife is helpful in prying the tiles loose.
